London to Bath Recce
Adam, Chris and Naz were all set for the London to Bath trip this weekend, which did indeed go ahead. However….due to the lack of Arsenal fans on the trip (according to Chris), we ended up getting lost, navigating on more than one occasion in the wrong direction. Here’s Chris’ report:
Can’t believe I had to spend the day in the company of such staggering ineptitude, which all made sense when it became clear over lunch that both Naz & Adam are Scum supporters.
You will unsurprised to hear that every time they set off to do a bit of cycling they got lost, and surpassed themselves at lunchtime. I had gone ahead to Bray and managed to secure us a table in the Hinds Head (Heston’s pub). Having spent about 45 mins drooling over the menu and defending the turf against hordes of tourists, I got a late call from Naz explaining they were miles away on the wrong side of the river and could I come to them for lunch. I duly left the Hinds Head and went off to Burnham were we had a ghastly burger in the shittiest of pubs….
That said, we had a successful recce in the end and have worked out the route and the stopovers. It’s actually a bit further than I thought, nearer 140 miles so the itinerary now looks a bit like this.
Fri 24th July – Richmond to Reading (54 miles)
Sat 25th July – Reading to Devizes (59 miles)
Sun 26th July – Devizes to Bath (25 miles) & train home.
I will get the final numbers and book up the hotels. The only thing we haven’t figured out is the support vehicle, something to carry the overnight bags and drinks, snacks etc. We won’t need a van as we’re not transporting the bikes anywhere this time and so an estate car with a bike rack to cover any emergencies would do fine. Adam is going to ask his Dad if he wants to do it. Does Lynn want to co-pilot?
